A long, long time ago, the ancient Maya worshiped the goddess Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, love, and fertility. Isla Mujeres was a sanctuary for her, and the Maya left statues of women in her honor.
When Spanish explorers arrived and saw all those statues, they decided to name the place "Isla Mujeres" (Island of Women).
